Joey Dunlop’s career bought him success on most of the world’s toughest circuits. He always remained the quiet, unchanged family man of Ballymoney in Northern Ireland. He was not interested in the headlines and never boasted about his achievements. He just wanted to get on with the job.

Joey, “The King of the Roads” became the most successful rider of all time due to his skill, nerve and ambition. Joey won five Formula I World Championships and made sporting history by setting a new record of 26 wins in the Isle of Man TT races. The fact that Joey Dunlop won almost twice as many TTs as any other competitor in the 97 year history of the event is in itself incredulous, but the man truly was a phenomenon.

In 1986 his achievements were recognised when he was awarded the MBE. His humanitarian efforts were also recognised in 1996 when he was awarded the OBE.

Joey was tragically killed on the 2nd July 2000 in Tallinn, Estonia. It was estimated 50,000 to 70000 people attended his funeral in Northern Ireland and this staggering fact alone demonstrates the love and admiration people had for the man, who is arguably the greatest Isle of Man TT rider of them all.
